Cyclist given CPR on Bealach Beag sportif

During the gruelling 44 mile road sportif cycle ride known as the 'Bealch Beag' in the Applecross peninsula, a cyclist collapsed at the top of a very steep hill less than 10 miles before the end. A fellow cyclist and Doctor saw him collapse and a BASP trained first aider was the next on scene. They both gave CPR to this person and helped to revive them until Mountain Rescue and Ambulance could come and give further help.

The BASP trained first aid later said "I was really suprised that my training really worked, when the casualty was unconscious and not breathing we gave CPR and they responded and started breathing again."

Thanks also to the Torridan Mountain Rescue team who provided safety and first aid cover at the event.  I can tell you that the hills are incredibly steep and are very fast to descend. Thank fully there were no serious accidents this year.

News from Hands on Events

"Many of you may have heard about the cyclist who was in trouble round the coast road. We are pleased to confirm that the cyclist airlifted from the event at the weekend has undergone an operation to clear a blocked artery and a full recovery is anticipated.

We would like to express our thanks to the two doctors and the unknown cyclist who administered the initial CPR. The quick thinking and professional skills of these people contributed to this positive outcome. We are also grateful for the decisiveness of Torridon MRT and skill of the Stornaway Coastguard who ensured the quick evacuation of the casualty to Broadford Hospital."
