Our Advanced First Aid course is specifically created for individuals wishing to further their skills beyond the basic first aider. A practical 2 day skills course aiming to improve your knowledge and confidence in dealing with pre-hospital care situations within a remote environment. Major outdoor scenarios will be covered, along with the use of a wide range of medical equipment, scene management and triage. The course will be delivered with extensive use of outdoor based scenarios utilising typical equipment used in rescue. This course is also suitable to those aspiring to do the Casualty Care course or BASP EMT.
There will be some pre-course reading and study required before attending the course. Please note this course requires a certain amount of physical activity and you will need to demonstrate CPR techniques from the floor in a group environment. Assessments include practical scenarios on a continuous assessment basis.
Course Aim: To train individuals in advanced first aid in an outdoor and remote environment. The course will be delivered with extensive use of outdoor based scenarios utilising typical equipment used in rescue.
The content will include:
- Respiratory, Cardiovascular and Skeletal System
- Casualty Assessment
- Common Medical Emergencies
- Head Injuries
- Treatment of the avalanched and hypothermic casualty
- Mountain Rescue Protocols
- Use of Medication
Multiple Outdoor Scenarios will incorporate the use of the following Rescue Equipment:
- Oral and Nasal Pharyngeal airways
- Bag Valve Mask
- Suction
- Oxygen and Entonox therapy
- Splinting including traction, SAM and pelvic splints
- Vacuum mattresses
- Collars
- Pulse Oximetry
- Scoop stretchers
Major outdoor scenarios to demonstrate all skills, including scene management (safety), documentation and handover. Please contact us before the course if you have any special needs, or concerns regarding the assessment process.
Assessment: Prior learning of basic first aid will be continually assessed and a formal written paper and gases assessment will have to be passed to achieve the qualification.
Pre-Requisites
We train candidates to be safe, confident responders - Individuals who already hold a valid 2 day/16hr first aid certificate and have done at least 2 previous courses in basic first aid. It would also be advantageous to have some outdoor first aid experience. Candidates will be expected to have a good standard of basic life support knowledge before attending this course. There will be some pre-course reading and study required before attending the course.
Candidates must be 18 years or over in order to apply for a place.

Suitable for
Individuals looking to improve their first aid knowledge beyond that of basic first aid. Instructors who would like to improve their skills whilst still satisfying their NGB requirements. Individuals who work/volunteers in Ski Patrol, Mountain Rescue or Bike Patrol. Individuals who provide first aid at organised events. First Aiders looking to work towards the BASP Emergency Medical Technician Course or Casualty Care Course, Ski Patrol, Mountain Rescue and Bike Patrol.

Certificate valid
Successful candidates are issued with a BASP certificate valid for 2 years. You can revalidate this qualification by repeating the course. Successful candidates are also issued with an Outdoor Emergency First Aid certificate valid for 3 years.
